Dealing with potholes on my E-scooter has become an everyday affair.
When travelling around the world I’ve always thought you can tell a lot about a country from the state of its roads.
Well-surfaced roads indicate a well-run, prosperous country which takes its drivers and other road users’ safety seriously.
I wonder what visitors to the UK think of us these days? Many of our roads are in an appalling state, with huge pot holes all over the place. This is bad enough in a car, but on a smaller wheeled vehicle such as an E-scooter it’s potentially lethal.
A three inch deep pothole is enough to send you over the handlebars, and some of them are a hell of a lot deeper than that.
These bad boys are on a stretch of road less than half a mile from my house, and they’ve been there for months.
Local people drive long stretches on the opposite side of the road to avoid them. But on a bike or a scooter it’s less feasible, so we have to spot and swerve, and that’s tricky – particularly after dark.
We’re told by the government to get out of our cars and use more environmentally friendly forms of transport, but, thanks to years of under-investment, when you do so, you take your life into your own hands!
