What is the best electric scooter for a teenager?
My daughter, like most of her friends according to the other dads, has to be prised out of her room for fresh air. So I recently tried a new tactic. I persuaded her to come on a family dog walk by promising her a ride on my electric scooter.
This proved a master stroke. She was soon racing around with a big smile on her face, which is fairly unusual these days (she is into Billie Eilish, after all).
When we got back, the wife and I had a conflab and decided she should have one for Christmas, rather than the Nintendo indoor games console she has asked for.
I had a budget of £400 to stick to. I wanted something light enough for her to lift, and slow enough to be safe. This gave me plenty of options, and after spending a whole morning choosing, I decided that the best electric scooter for my teenager was the Segway Ninebot E22.
What’s so good about the Segway Ninebot E22?
I chose this model for a number of reasons. My own Segway Ninebot has proven bulletproof so far. It has more warranty than the alternatives and can be upgraded with an additional battery. This increases both speed and range, if she needs to do so in the future. It also handily uses the same app as mine, so there’s less faffing.
It’s 30% lighter than my Segway Max, which is too heavy for her to lift, and 20% slower, which means she is never travelling faster than a flat out run – making it safer.
The only potential downside is that it has no higher water resistance than my own. Saying that, I reckon she’ll be a fair weather rider like her dad. There’s no way we will be allowing her to use it to get to school, so overall, it didn’t seem that important.
